Learn how to link Excel to an AutoCAD DWG using Data Link and create a linked table that can be updated when your Excel spreadsheet changes.

In this tutorial, I’ll continue the piping isometric BOM workflow from the previous video and show you the 3 primary steps for creating an Excel Data Link table:

1. DATAEXTRACTION — Use the Data Extraction template created in the previous video to quickly generate your BOM and export the data to an Excel XLS file.

2. DATALINK — Establish a link between your Excel spreadsheet and the DWG drawing.

3. TABLE — Use the TABLE command to insert the linked Excel data back into your drawing as a CAD table.

Once the link is established, you can make changes to the spreadsheet in Excel and update the linked table in your drawing—without having to recreate the table manually.

This workflow is especially useful for piping isometric drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), schedules, material takeoffs, and other CAD projects where drawing information needs to be coordinated with Excel.

This tutorial uses AViCAD, an AutoCAD alternative. The workflow and commands demonstrated are also applicable to AutoCAD.
